Nissan started as Nihon Diesel Industries in Kawaguchi, near Toyko, Japan, in 1935 making two-stroke diesel motors. The company was renamed Nissan Diesel Motor Co. in 1960 and focused on making trucks. Volvo took over the company in 2007, though Nissan continued as a separate division and changing the name in 2010 to UD Trucks. In late 2019, Volvo signed a non-binding Memorandum of Agreement that would see the company eventually transferred to Isuzu.
